  1. love the use of gray and the equalization of things via the stroke. i can see how someone might call the similar if not absolutely consistent brush size throughout monotnous, but i would disagree with this hypothetical critic. I think the stroke here takes a stand, if that's not too grandiose a way to put it. It reflects on the artificiality of art.
Matisse did great things with gray and black in his landscapes. Some plants, like dianthus or olive trees are a beautiful blue or gray green, but I'm rambling.

    who are your faves?
or, more pointedly, who are your favorite modern/contemporary landscape painters?

  2. Favorite modern/contemporary landscape painters . . . off the top of my head: Cezanne, Matisse, Bonnard, Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Gaugin . . . Charles Burchfield (love him), Ryder, Jack B. Yeats, Morandi (I know, but sometimes I think of him as a landscape [cityscape] painter), Albert York (sometimes) . . . others I can't think of.

As far as contemporary people, can't think of anyone I love (painting landscape) offhand except for a few unknown people -- people I went to school with, a few I've stumbled across online.

Tell me who I am missing.
